Foosball Table Size: Dimensions and How Much Room You Need

A foosball table looks small next to a pool table, but it needs more room than its footprint. The rods stick out of both sides, and the players stand behind them and lean back when they shoot. These are the standard sizes, how much room each one takes, and what to buy.

Quick answer: a regulation foosball table is about 56 in long, 30 in wide and 36 in high, with a playing field of about 48 x 27 in. The rods stick out another 8 to 10 in on each side. Home tables are about 52 x 28 in and compact ones 48 x 24 in. Plan a room of at least 10 x 8 ft for a regulation table, 9 x 7 ft for a home table and 8 x 6 ft for a compact one.

Table sizes, the 8 to 10 in rod overhang, the 3 ft behind each player and the minimum room sizes are from Gameroom Shop's foosball size guide; the 56 x 30 x 36 in regulation size matches Bonzini USA and the Tornado T-3000, the ITSF-certified table of the Tornado National Tour. The comfortable room sizes are calculated: the table's length plus 6 ft, and its width plus 20 in of rods plus 6 ft.

How to work out what fits

  1. Measure the room, then decide which way the table runs. Players stand on the long sides, so the room's width across the rods matters more than its length.
  2. Add the rods. A table listed as 30 in wide is about 46 to 50 in across the rod ends, and a rod pushed all the way in sticks out further on the other side.
  3. Give each player 3 ft behind the rod ends. Less than that and they hit the wall when they pull back for a shot.
  4. Leave room at the ends for the ball returns and for anyone watching. Many tables return the ball at the ends, where the scorers are.
  5. If children will play, look at telescopic rods. On tables like the Hathaway Allure they don't stick out of the far side, so they don't catch anyone standing there.

Flooring and lighting

Put the table on a hard floor or low-pile carpet so it sits level; use the leg levelers to stop the ball drifting to one side. Hang the light over the middle of the field so the rods don't throw shadows across it.
